End Gatekeeping

I’m gonna call it like it is. Gatekeepers treat people as if they haven’t “earned” the right to be a part of the scene. It’s like you can only get in if you know the secret password or something.
Can I speak for everyone when I say that gatekeeping music makes you lame as hell? You’re limiting opportunity and hurting the scene my dudes. And I don’t mean only local music. I mean the scene in its entirety. Gatekeeping isn’t only an issue within the local realm, but so many bands are affected by it.
The underground for the underground! We LOVE our DIY hidden communities, but it’s not a clique. This isn’t a Cinderella moment where you’re only accepted if the shoe fits.
I mean, don’t we all start off as posers anyway? For so many of us, including myself, core music is a lifestyle. But I could only imagine how difficult it would be to love something you haven’t “earned” the right to be a part of. Would you deny yourself entrance to the culture? Probably not, right? No one is above anyone, ya hear??? Our scene should be tangible. There’s a lot of sad kids out there looking for somewhere to belong. Don’t make it harder for them. Stop making it harder for other bands. Stop making it harder for promoters and venue owners.
“Music is for everyone, you don’t get to pick who gets something or feels something from the music. The music is there and everyone gets access to it, just like food and water. You don’t get to decide who needs it.”
