Oversaturation of local shows???

Is this gonna be an uncomfortable conversation? Okay, yeah probably, but like we should talk about it right?😭

I respect the hustle. I respect the love for local music and the want to bring community together, but what happens if there's shows every single weekend? Crowds are thinning, bands are dropping, promoters are clashing. How do all of those things affect the music scene? Wellllll since you asked, let's break it down. 

Promoters are competing for dates. They want dibs, the bigger audience, the better bands. Hey I don't make the rules, I just play the game. Unfortunately, this creates a lot of division. In a perfect world, we all want a loyal crowd that'll show up for our shiz, but realistically these kids aren't looking at it from our perspective. They just want to go to a show and hang out with their friends. Which is what this is all about, having fun. 

Since promoters are booking back to back shows our local bands are beginning to oversaturate. They are playing so often that there isn't much anticipation to see them. Show goers know they'll probably be playing again soon so they skip out on buying a presale ticket and don't even bother trying to make it out. This is causing crowds to thin. Because of the oversaturation bands are also getting burnt out. They don't want to keep playing the same shows at the same time at the same place every month. 

As the bands are burning out and crowds are thinning, our beloved venues begin to go under. Less bar sales, less foot traffic, less hype. I mean at this point we're losing our scene. 

Let me hold your hand when I say this, it's time to start looking at the music scene as a whole and outside of your own shows. What can those of us who are working behind the scenes do to balance this out? How can we keep things balanced and steady or as Cecil Hogg says, "Create FOMO again" so the kids stay engaged?
